In 1978 the great British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe put out an album that most of the world knew as Jesus of Cool, but in the US the title was Pure Pop for Now People - it's the theme for this week's program.

Poppin' in the 80s

Nothing Too Serious - Icehouse, it was on their 1987 album Man of Colours. Icehouse leader Iva Davies had a band called Flowers. Their first album was titled Icehouse. It was so popular, he changed the band's name to Icehouse.

My Girl - Hoodoo Gurus, from their debut album Stoneage Romeos, a 1984 release. This version from the 2000 collection Ampology.

Let's Go To Paradise - Mental As Anything, from their 1987 album Fundamental.

Pop was harder in the 70s

The Angels - Face To Face was the album, we played three songs: After The Rain, Waiting For The World, and Am I Ever Going to See Your Face Again. We featured the 1980 international version of Face To Face, which was in fact a mash-up of their second and third albums, Face To Face, 1978, and No Exit, 1979. The Angels were a product of Alberts Studio, the Sydney company that also gave us the Easybeats and AC/DC.

Some pop...

Love Supplier - Ralph White. This version was reissued on the Austudy label in April 2025 as a compilation titled Disco. Ralph White was a studio musician and producer in Sydney when he was approached by a label to create four songs for two 12-inch singles of a popular new dance music called disco. Over two days at the Alberts Studio in Sydney, White and a handful of local studio players, including renowned guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, laid down four disco tracks.

Hey Rock and Roll - Benny and the Jets, another New South Wales band, this was the title track of their 1974 album. Elton John's 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road included the song Benny and the Jets.

Live Without It - Killing Heidi, featuring Ella Hooper singing, it was on the band's debut album, Reflector, a 2000 release.

I Am An Island - Richard Clapton, from 1982, a single from his album The Great Escape. According to our research, Richard Clapton's birth name is elusive - he reportedly chose his name using the last names of two of his heroes, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.
