The recent music show

Down Under Hour office staff use the Australia Concise Oxford Dictionary, which defines the word "recent" as meaning "something that happened or began only a short time ago". But time being relative, the Oxford definition also allows there to be recent months, which suits us just fine.

Phantom Island - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard with title track to their latest album, which came out on June 13, 2025. It reportedly emerged from the making of their previous album, Flight b741, which was released in August 2024.

Werewolf - Felicity Cripps, lately (as opposed to recently) she's been working as Felicity Cripps Band, from her (their) album Chasing Volcanoes. It came out on August 22, 2024.

Who's Watching Who? - Brothers Mark and Rob Snarski, playing as Snarski v Snarski, fixtures on the Australian music scene for many years in various groups, this song was on their first record together, Waiting For the Bell, released on October 17, 2024. Both brothers are songwriters so here they turn things around and sing one another's songs.

The Velvet Affair - Wesley Fuller, from his album All Fuller No Filler, released March 15, 2024.

Baby Don't You Cry - Brooke Taylor, from her album There's Magic In Mistakes, an April 29, 2024 release.

Minivan - John Dowler's Vanity Project, it was on the album Existential Friend, which came out on November 29, 2024. John Dowler also led the bands Young Modern and the Zimmermen.

Chewing Gum - Amyl and the Sniffers, from their album Cartoon Darkness, which they released on October 25, 2024.

Lost My Head - Bleak Squad, sometimes written as Bleaksquad. A preview single for an album, expected to be titled Strange Love, which at this point in time hasn't been released. We don't often use the term "super group" but it might be apt here as the band comprises Mick Harvey, one of Nick Cave's long-term playmates; Mick Turner, guitarist from Dirty Three and a dozen other groups; Adalita, who has fronted the band Magic Dirt for many years; and session drummer/producer Marty Brown.

Lookin' Out - King Stingray, from Northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, The song is on their album For The Dreams, a November 8, 2024 release.

Summer Skies - Straight Arrows, off the album Surface World, released August 9, 2024.

To Survive - Liz Stringer, from the album The Second High, which came out on March 28, 2025.

Tell It Back To Me - Robert Forster, the song is on his album Strawberries, released on May 23, 2025. Forster was part of the band The Go Betweens.

Done To - Sarah Carroll, from her album NRB&Q, released on July 5, 2024.

First Step in a Homeward Direction - the title track of the album by Mick Thomas and his band the Roving Commission, a May 19, 2025 release. Mick Thomas is a fixture on the Australian music scene with his various bands - in particular Weddings, Parties, Anything, and as a solo artist.

Intro, exit, and everything else - Frank Moylan.
