A great thing that has occurred while doing The Smooth Side Of Jazz is meeting artists and getting the opportunity to ask questions in interviews that have given me an inside look at their lives and careers. There was the in studio interview with sensational jazz singer and pianist Sarah McKenzie, now an international star, that is still available in our archives on our program on April 20th, 2019. Then there was the phone interview with young prodigy jazz pianist Joey Alexander on our March 28th, 2020 program. All before his 18th birthday, Joey has achieved a lifetime of accolades and experiences including being featured on CBS’s 60 minutes and on The Today Show. He had been nominated for three Grammys from his first two albums, performed at the 58th Grammy show on national TV, sold out his debut at Carnegie Hall, sold out at performance at the Lincoln Center, performed for the Obamas at the White House, and performed for the Clintons. Then I had another chance to interview Sarah McKenzie at the end of last year. That interview was broadcast on our January 9th program. Well it is time to check in on these terrific artists' latest work.
Sarah McKenzie just released her latest composition on March 18th. Sarah’s keys are accompanied by Ingrid Jensen on trumpet, Linda May Han Oh on bass, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, Gabor Bolla on sax and Donald Edwards on drums. Sarah’s composition is titled Sink Or Swim.
I have the latest release from Joey Alexander. Joey is now 17 years old. Amazing as his talent was as a child, as he enters adulthood, his talent is reaching the highest levels. He is now playing a new style. In a way he has become a band leader. On this song Joey is playing an electric piano, a Fender-Rhodes that is a unique instrument that generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate between an electromagnetic pickup. He is accompanied by an alto saxophone, electric guitar, electric bass, and drums. Joey released this single March 19th titled Salt.
