Show 194

Spicks and Specks - the Bee Gees, a 1966 single written by Barry Gibb, which charted well in Australia and also in New Zealand, Germany and the Netherlands. At the time the brothers were successful in Australia, but Barry Gibb was becoming better known as a songwriter than as a performer.

Parasol - the Resignators, from their 2017 album Party Date. The band includes long-time Australian resident Steve Douglas on guitar and backing vocals - he was "Jaws of Death" in the original lineup of renowned US metal band Gwar.

Two Steps Back - Strange Tenants, from a 1983 EP, Take One Step. The band started in Melbourne in 1981 and has been called the godfathers of Australian ska.

Lygon Street Meltdown - the Melbourne Ska Orchestra, from their self-titled 2013 album. Lygon Street is a cultural and economic district in central Melbourne.

Rocket to the present

Beef Jerk - Fast Food, their new single. Flip it over for Comedy Club.

Ambient Brain - Sacred Cowboys, it's on their album In The Manifesto, a March release. Sacred Cowboys have been around since 1982, off and on, sort of a musical collective.

Lost My Head - Bleak Squad, the band could be called a supergroup but the members prefer supernatural. It's on their debut album, Let Go of Love, a September release. The band comprises Mick Harvey, one of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds; Mick Turner, from Dirty Three and a dozen other groups; Adalita, who has fronted Magic Dirt for many years; and Marty Brown,.from Art of Fighting.

Guitar hero

Courtney Barnett, recognized as a singer and songwriter but for a long time now she's been taking the lead on guitar on her recordings and in her concerts. We heard:

- Analysis Paralysis - the song is on Jen Cloher's self-titled 2017 album but the version here is from a live-in-the studio session with Courtney Barnett on lead guitar.

- One Thing At A Time - from Courtney Barnett's album Creature of Habit, which came out in March 2026.

We've come unstuck in time

Martian Skyline - the Church, from their new album, titled Lacuna, which is supposed to arrive in late October.

Whisper - Schnell Fenster, from their 1988 album The Sound of Trees. Band members Noel Crombie, Nigel Griggs, Phil Judd, and, briefly, Eddie Rayner, were all in Split Enz. Michael den Elzen was in Split Enz alumnus Tim Finn's band.

By Water - Hedge Burners, it's on their album Fall Out of the Future, which arrived in March 2026. As for the band's name, vandals setting fire to people's garden hedges was a thing in Melbourne in the early 1990s.

Dracula - Kevin Parker as Tame Impala, it's is on his 2025 album Deadbeat.
