Show 193

The time for best-of lists is December.

This week's guest stars:

Dame Edna Everage

Carl Barron

Kylie Minogue

Kath and Kim

Alone With You - Sunnyboys, a single from their self-titled 1981 debut album, which has recently received the reissue treatment, a four-LP vinyl-only box set version of the album, to mark 45 years since it came out. Sunnyboys were led by brothers Jeremy and Peter Oxley, who are still playing gigs around Australia.

Face With No Name - a 1980 single by the Passengers, featuring Angie Pepper singing.

History Never Repeats - Split Enz, from their 1981 album, released as Corroboree in Australia, where it was recorded, and as Waiata in New Zealand, where the band is from. Waiata is a Maori term for song, singing, and expressing feelings, and corroboree is an Australian Aboriginal term for celebration with dance and music. The songs History Never Repeats and One Step Ahead were among the first music videos aired on MTV when the cable television channel launched in the US in 1981.

We wander into the 21st century

Western - the Church, from their new album, titled Lacuna, which is supposed to arrive in late October.

The Hardest Thing - Julia Jacklin, from her album The Gem, which came out in late September.

F Plus For Trying - Bagful of Beez, Lindsay McLennon solo in 2021 doing the first Beez album by himself. The album title, Do Androids Dream of Electric Beatles, is a play on the title of Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which was the source inspiration for Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner.

Guitar Hero

Our guitar hero this time is Ashley Naylor, who keeps himself busy playing in the Church (see above) and in Paul Kelly's band, along with...

- Cherry Afterglow - Even, his band of the past 25 years, from their album Reverse Afterglow, which came out in 2021.

- Can't Stop Me - the Ronson Hangup, it's on their 2023 album Centaurus.

- Racing Time - from Ashley Naylor's album under his own name, from 2025, Alexandria Sunset.

Kylie acts and sings

I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue, from her 1987 debut album, Kylie, recorded in London.

King Gizz - it's not Alien Metal

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - in 2017 they released five studio albums, including Polygondwanaland. This three-part sequence includes:

- the title song,

- The Castle In the Air,

- Deserted Dunes Welcome Weary Feet.

Expert in a Dying Field - the Beths, from New Zealand, the title track of their 2022 album. It's worth repeating that we heard about this recording via one of our favorite writers, Greil Marcus: "It’s wonderful when a band you’ve never heard of becomes your favorite as soon as you do. That happened to me with the Beatles, it happened with the Fastbacks, it happened with Sleater-Kinney, and now it’s happened with the Beths."

Crystal Theatre - Belles Will Ring, at 54 seconds possibly the shortest album title track ever released. The album came out in 2011.

Dom Mariani and the Majestic Kelp start us off, move us along, and tell us when we're done
