Songs for the road
Minivan - John Dowler's Vanity Project, it was on the album Existential Friend, which came out in 2024. John Dowler also led the bands Young Modern and the Zimmermen.
Road Trip - Adrian Kosky, it was on his album The High Side of the Low End, from 2006. Before taking up the guitar, Kosky was renowned as a player of the mountain dulcimer. He splits his time between western Victoria in Australia and Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Stay In Your Lane - Courtney Barnett, from her new album Creature of Habit. It came out in late March.
Now and then
- Out Of Thin Air - Ups And Downs, a new single, their first new music in 10 years, ahead of an upcoming tour.
- The Living Kind - Ups And Downs circa 1986, a single off their album Sleepless. We have it on a best-of collection, Stained Glass Memories, which came out in April 2025.
- Midnight TV - Huxton Creepers, after 40-plus years away, a new new single and they're taking the show on the road.
- Autumn Leaves - Huxton Creepers' new shows will feature their 1986 album 12 Days To Paris, including this song.
- Moonstruck Man - the Datsuns, from New Zealand, this is their new single, the title track of a new album expected soon.
- Sittin' Pretty - from the Datsuns' self-titled first album, which came out in 2002.
Into the vault
From 1974, the voice of The Easybeats, Stevie Wright, and his debut solo album, Hard Road. We heard:
- Let Your Hair Down
- Evie
- I'm Losing You
By 1974 their band the Easybeats had been retired and Harry Vanda and George Young were focused on writing and producing for the Alberts studio in Sydney. They brought their Easybeats singer Stevie Wright into the studio and helped him make his first solo album, titled Hard Road. Stevie wrote most of the songs but Vanda and Young wrote the album's centerpiece, a three-part song titled Evie. In its 11-minute entirety the song charted at No. 1 in Australia. George Young's brother Malcolm took time off from playing in his own band, AC/DC, to play guitar on the album.
The Sheik of Scrubby Creek - Chad Morgan, it came out as a single in 1952.
So This Is Love - Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, it's the title track of an album they put out in 2024. Cash Savage's uncle was the late Conway Savage, best known for his work with Nick Cave.
