Show 179

This week we present a timely timeless blend of new and old, known and unknown, but all Australian. It's 2026 - nostalgia will only take you so far.

Dr Heckyll & Mr Jive - Men At Work, a Colin Hay song from their second album, Cargo, which came out in 1983.

Somebody That I used To Know - Gotye, from his 2011 album Making Mirrors. Go-tee-yay, real name Wally De Backer, born in Belgium, moved to Australia with his family in the early 1980s at the age of two. He's also in a band called the Basics.

Sounds Of Then (This is Australia) - Ganggajang, from their self-titled first album, released in 1985. The bass player here is Buzz Bidstrup, who also played with the Angels and the Party Boys.

Songs from the year in which we are currently living, i.e. 2026

Time - Crow, it's on their new album Hold Sway, which will be coming out later in July, their first in more than 15 years. In the early 1990s Crow was called "the best band in Australia since the Birthday Party" by the music magazine Juice. Founding member Peter Archer died in May this year.

27 Minutes - Fancy Weapon, from their new self-titled album, a June release. The band comprises guitarist Mick Turner, who also plays with Dirty Three and Bleak Squad; renowned session guitarist Joel Silbersher; Claire Birchall, from Smoked Salmon, on bass; and Guy Maddison, part of Mudhoney and Lubricated Goat, drumming.

Odd Couple - Bagful of Beez, a single that came out in June. The band is run by Link Meanie - aka Link McLennan - he's been around for awhile with his other band the Meanies.

Into the vault

1977 was a big year for punk rockers. It's the year the Saints came roaring out of Brisbane, Queensland, with their first album, (I'm) Stranded, recorded in 1976, landing in London later that year. We heard:

- Wild About You, the Saints covering the song by wild 1960s Sydney band the Missing Links.

- Messin' With the Kid, not related to the 1960 Junior Wells song with that title.

- (I'm) Stranded, the title track of the album.

Back to present times

Fly Fishin' - Greg Bainbridge (Kim Salmon and the Surrealists) and The Band That Would Be King, from their self-titled album, which came out in May.

I Wanna Live - Joeys Coop, it came out in July on an album titled Sawdust Memories, a project led by Brett Myers, the former guitarist-songwriter from the band Died Pretty.

Johnny and Dee - The Eastern Dark, a tribute to the Ramones, the song came out as a single in 1985 and was reissued in April. Led by James Darroch (Celibate Rifles) on guitar, the band was on the rise in Sydney in 1986 when Darroch, 25, died in a road accident. The reissued single marks 40 years since his death.

Monthersong - Leah Senior, it's on her album Pt. Roadnight, which arrived in June. Point Roadknight is a renowned tourist and surfing destination in the state of Victoria.

Living In the Neighbourhood - Cyndi Boste, it's on her 2002 album Push Comes to Shove. Remember to be good to your family and friends and the folks in your neighborhood.

Dom Mariani and the Majestic Kelp start us off, move us along, and tell us when we're done.
